Fifth Day – OpenLab Performance 2019

The fifth day of the workshop started with some techincal works. Firstly, the linoleum carpet was spread out and it’s used for the projections on the floor. Some of us helped to link the camera with the computer in the backstage. The lights have been set up.

At the same time, others were busy with the first patches on Isadora, in order to try the first projections; others finished some props.

Before the break, the green screen shots of Ofelia and of the Ghost took place (for group 1 and 3).

After the break, the groups show their first patch, made with Isadora, in order to map it on the floor, with the assistance of the professors. In the meantime, some people teached to Amleto some gestures and movements for their scenes and others went on with their work on the patches and on music.

Fourth Day – OpenLab Perfomance 2019

DAY 4 | 20 May 2019

The fourth day of the workshop opened with the snapshot of the group photos to be inserted in the web documentation page. During the morning some students continued (individually) to demonstrate their basic knowledge of the software Isadora, always supervised by Maurizio Consolandi. In the meantime, all four working groups, one at a time, presented to Professor Pizzo their production plan to determine further changes. Subsequently, several performers were selected and each performer was given a role (the performer must always interpret the same character within each group’s performance).

In addition, the projector equipment has been set up and at the same time green screen, lights and camera have been positioned in order to make some filming already in the morning (the portraits “Rosencrantz” and “Guildestern” from Group 3). In the afternoon, after a break, there was a brief meeting during which each group told Professor Pizzo what was done in the morning.

While each student continued his work (someone was involved in graphics, sound editing, documentation material, sound composition, scenographic elements, etc.).

At the same time, further footage was taken on green screen (“Claudio’s coronation” from Group 2 and a zoom on Claudio from Group 1).

Third Day – OpenLab Performance 2019

On the third day of the workshop, the group of students took care of the arrangement of the technical equipment (assembly of the side scenes to obscure the environment, installation of the lights, repositioning of the back projection screen).

Everything has been arranged to create an environment suitable for projection. The assembly work of the structures took several hours. At the end of this, after a short break, the creative groups worked on their project. Professor Pizzo spent some time with every single group to revise the technical details of the individual performances.

Meanwhile, those who were not involved in the briefing, individually, demonstrated some basic knowledge of Isadora software, under the supervision of Maurizio Consolandi, head of StudiumLab. All groups must know the basics of the software to use it for the performance.

Those who were free, dedicated themselves to collecting material (videos, photos, texts) for the creation of this web diary that documents the work done during the workshop days.

Second Day – OpenLab Performance 2019

DAY 2 | 16 May 2019

The second day of the workshop started again with the walking exercises following the rhythm of the music.

Later, the four creative groups were defined with the approval of the professor. Each group consists of four members. Each group started working on a scene of the Hamlet chosen by mutual agreement. The professor gave an hour and a half of time to write a draft project indicating the following points:

Choose a scene
Find a main theme
Analyze the actions of agents
Imagine the representation of that scene in a digital performance
Explain how to use technical tools for the representation (video projections, live shooting, green screen etc…)

Afterwards, each group presented its proposal followed by the supervision and correction by the professor and the technical manager of the StudiumLab. Based on the suggestions of the two supervisors, the students continued to work on their project proposal until the end of the workshop.

First Day – OpenLab Performance 2019

DAY 1 | 14 May 2019

Macro theme of the laboratory: Hamlet, by William Shakespeare.

The laboratory began Tuesday, May 14th and the first week the group focused on organizational aspects.

The first day began with a series of theatrical exercises. The first one consisted of a walk on time to trigger the sense of rhythm and listening to the group, the second one aimed at looking for actions that would replace the words related to the “nunnery scene”.

After a few hours dedicated to the practice of these exercises, each participant reflected on a scene freely chosen from the Hamlet and then shared their ideas about a possible project draft with the whole group.

The day ended with the task, assigned by the professor, to create four creative groups (four people per group) to be presented the next day.

Tenth Day – OpenLab Performance 2019

DAY 10 | 30 May 2019

During the last day of the lab, all the participating students, dismantled the equipment used for the production of the video footage and reorganized the lab’s room.

After having rearranged and cleaned the room,the students,Professor Pizzo and Maurizio, watched the projection of the projects carried out by each group. The day ended with a small lunch kindly offered by the professor, some notes regarding the final report that each student will have to submit in the examination session and final thanks.
